Every weekend, two couples meet in their adjacent country homes in Normandy. But their friendly arrangement is destroyed when Jean abruptly leaves Christine, even as Sylvette and Ulrich look on. In the ensuing weeks, their previously peaceful existence is turned upside down. Christine goes back to being single, Jean brings his new girlfriend along and their friends try to find their place in the new constellation.
